In Baton Rouge, Louisiana Ignite Advocacy Network was created by New Orleans State Law Maker, Helena Moreno. The Nonprofit will address women’s issues. Health, education, violence prevention and employment issues.

The idea behind the nonprofit is to ignite awareness. The ignite Advocacy network says, “Ignite Advocacy Network aims to educate the public about the state of women in Louisiana, advocate for positive policies, and activate its network to influence lawmakers. Everyone is invited to join the network. Members will be alerted of policy issues and may be asked to take action such as contact lawmakers, attend public hearings, and write letters to the editor.”

According to a recent study, by IWPR.org, women, with a full-time job, are paid 80 percent of what men are. Simply put, if a man is making a dollar, a woman is making 80 cents. Pay equity, amongst men and women is an issue during each election. But with women still making less than 20 percent of men, it doesn’t appear the issue is being addressed.

Violence against women isn’t much better. One in every 3 women are either sexually or physically abused. The primary targets of violence were: younger women, minority women and low-income women. The numbers by state are even more staggering, with the state of Louisiana ranking towards the top of most dangerous states for women.

Initiatives, like the Ignite Advocacy Network are much needed. Raising awareness of problems, within a community, are important. Social media, flyers, news articles, anything can be used to inform people of societal problems.
