The San Manuel Band of Mission Indians, an Indian tribe in Highland, California, awarded a $1 million grant to a Children’s Fund on Monday December 12, 2016. The purpose of the grant was to increase services at The Children’s Assessment Center in San Bernardino.

According to the Assessment Center in San Bernardino’s website, they help children who were involved in abuse cases. The Center has recently relocated to a large facility in San Bernardino: where it works with over one-thousand children.

According to the most recent U.S. data, more than 700,000 children suffer from abuse each year. (Children are individuals between 0-17) 9% of children suffered from sexual abuse, 18 % from physical abuse while most abuse, 80%, is child neglect.

Unfortunately, the most common abuser of children are their parents. Of the children abused, parental abuse accounted for more than 75% of the cases. In 2014, approximately 1,564 children died from abuse and neglect in the U.S.

This is what makes organizations like the San Bernardino Assessment Center important. Giving children a facility, for their protection, is imperative. The grant, from the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians will go a long way in furthering the San Bernardino Assessment Center’s mission.

The grant will extend for a period of three years and will help with training, employment and other needs of the San Bernardino Assessment Center.
