The nonprofit “Open Arms,” served its five-millionth meal on yesterday, December 16, 2016. Open Arms is located in Minnesota. The organization cooks and delivering free meals to individuals suffering from various severe diseases.

Providing food to people in need is important. 13% of households, in the United States, are lacking food. A leading cause of food insecurity is poverty. The 2015 stats indicate 43.1 million individuals are suffering from poverty.

People suffering from HIV/AIDS, ALS and other serious ailments cannot shop or cook food. Add these individuals to the 43 million people suffering from poverty. The United States has a serious food crisis. The U.S. has various food supplementary programs, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), The National School Lunch Program (NSLP) and the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC).

What makes Open Arms unique are the people they look after. Open Arms is helping people who might not suffer from poverty and might not be a census bureau statistic. Open Arms is helping individuals suffering from life altering diseases. They are helping people who need help.
